Depending on your needs, you may want to buy a step-up transformer, a step-down transformer or an isolation transformer.

A step-up transformer is designed to increase or ‘step-up’ the voltage and is useful for electric power distribution on a larger scale, starting up specific electrical appliances, and for devices that have been manufactured in a different country.

If you need to buy a step-down transformer, it means you need to convert a higher voltage at the primary side to a lower voltage at the secondary side. Street transformers that provide power to buildings and homes are usually step-down transformers.

When you want to buy an isolation transformer, it is typically for distribution to multiple loads/devices to meet National Electrical Code (NEC). Isolation transformers create secondary side voltage through means of magnetic field activation without physical connection so in the event of a fault/failure there is reduced opportunity for output voltages to increase causing harm to downstream equipment or persons. They “isolate” primary voltage from secondary voltage.
